Car won’t start on a cold morning? Battery, starter or alternator

How to tell a dead battery from a bad starter or alternator by the sounds your car makes, and what to check before you buy parts.

The first real cold snap in Tooele County sorts out every weak battery in the valley. If your car didn’t start this morning, the sound it made (or didn’t make) tells you a lot about where to look.

What the sound means

What you hear Most likely cause
Rapid clicking, dash lights flicker Weak or dead battery
One loud click, then nothing Starter, or a bad battery cable connection
Slow, labored cranking Weak battery, or the charging system isn’t keeping it charged
Normal cranking, but it never fires Fuel, spark, or a sensor problem, not the battery
Nothing at all, no dash lights Completely dead battery or a disconnected cable
Starts fine, dies while driving Often the alternator

Why cold makes it worse

A battery makes less power when it’s cold, and a cold engine with thick oil takes more power to turn over. So a battery that was getting tired in October can give up on the first morning in the teens. That’s why January is the busiest month for no-start calls around here.

What to check yourself

  • Look at the battery terminals. White or green crust can block current. Cleaning them sometimes gets you going.
  • Check how old the battery is. There’s often a date sticker on top. Batteries commonly last about three to five years in Utah.
  • Turn on the headlights. If they’re dim or die when you try to crank, the battery is the first suspect.
  • Try a jump. If it starts right up on a jump, the battery or charging system is your problem. If it still just clicks once with a good jump, look at the starter.

Don’t just buy a battery

A new battery won’t fix a bad alternator, a corroded cable or something draining the battery overnight. If one of those is the real cause, the new battery dies too. That’s the most common way people spend money on a no-start and still have a no-start.

A proper test checks three things: how much the battery really has left under load, what the alternator is putting out with the engine running, and whether anything is pulling power with the car off.

When it cranks but won’t start

If the engine spins at a normal speed and never catches, your battery and starter are probably fine. The engine isn’t getting fuel or spark, or the computer isn’t getting a signal it needs, like from a crankshaft position sensor. That calls for diagnostics, not a battery.
